Happy Halloween (Post 235)

Well, I'm sure the question on your mind today is:

How long can I keep the Trick-or-Treat candy, before it goes bad?

Well, Surprise! Surprise! Candy never truly goes bad.

Do you know why?

Because of the huge amounts of sugar in it.

It will however lose it's flavor and color.

Carmel is good for 6 to 9 months or can be frozen and stay good for a year.

Gum is chewable for 6 to 9 months and then will dry out.

Candy Corn can last for 9 months if you just look at the package and don't open it, but if open last 3 to 6 months

Jelled Candy can last a year unopened, but only 6 to 9 months in a candy dish.

Hard Candy can last one year.

Chocolate - that ever loveable chocolate can last 1 to 2 years.

Enjoy the candy and hoard a little for those middle of the night cravings throughout the year.

Trick or Treat Safety Tips (Post 228)

Here's a list of Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips to add to your ten cent crazy book

An adult should always inspect children's candy when they are done trick-or-treating to remove open packages and choking hazards and throw out anything not factory-wrapped - no homemade treats unless you know the cook.- limit amount of treats to be eaten for the evening

Anyone Trick or Treating should always wear light colored clothing to be seen in the dark - and reflective tape should be put on bikes, skateboards, brooms and trick or treat bags

Map out a route so that everyone knows where they are going and how to get home

You may be dressed strange so be careful around animals, especially dogs

Stay on the sidewalks - don't walk in the street

Everyone should have a flashlight with fresh batteries

Stay off the grass and only visit homes with porch lights on

Don't talk to a stranger that approaches you, never go inside a strangers home or get into their car

Watch for cars - look both ways before crossing the street and cross at the corner, don't go between parked vehicles

Use face paint instead of a mask - test make-up on a small area of skin and never go to bed with it on

Use a glow stick instead of a candle in pumpkins. If there is a pumpkin with a candle, be careful, wigs, capes and costumes will catch fire if you get to close

Children should know how to call 9-1-1 if they become lost

Costume accessories (swords, knifes, sticks, canes) should be short, soft and flexible

Hats should not cover eyes

Shoes should fit well

Never trick or treat alone

Don't cut through alleys or fields, stay in populated, well lighted areas

Having a cell phone with you is always a good idea

Teddy Bear Day (Post 222)

Here's something to add to the calendar in your ten cent crazy book

October 13th is
National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work and School Day

You see in 1902 Teddy Roosevelt was invited to go hunting. When most of the other hunters had killed something and he had not, his attendants clubbed a black bear and tied it to a tree for him to shoot..
When he refused and said it was unsportsmanlike - political cartoonist had a field day and starting drawing cartoons - each making the bear smaller and smaller.
And the toy of a "Teddy" Bear came to be.

So it's good for us adults to have an excuse to carry our Teddy Bears around one day a year, thanks to a president who refused to use unsportsmanlike conduct.

So whether you have a good old fashion "Teddy" Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, Teddy Ruxpin or Care Bear get him out and take him to work.

Carving Pumpkins (Post 219)

Ok, it’s time to buy those pumpkins – whether you’re going to carve them or just sit them out in front of the house or on a kitchen counter or next to the fireplace, there are pumpkins everywhere you look. Find whatever pumpkin makes you feel happy – maybe it’s putting a pumpkin on every step – ranging in size from large too small or just one great big jolly pumpkin.
Pumpkins last a really long time if the weather is cool, and you don’t carve them – they can easily look good from Halloween until Thanksgiving.

If you do plan on carving your pumpkin into a jack-o’-lantern – here are some tips to add to your ten cent crazy book.

Before you get out the knife – think about it

If you carve your pumpkin, more than a week before Halloween – you will probably have gnats everywhere by time the trick or treating starts

Know what kind of face you want to give your pumpkin

Draw it on a piece of paper – really like it

Remember if you make cuts between the mouth and nose to close to each other your pumpkin may crack and fall apart

Buy the right pumpkin

Sometimes a malformed pumpkin will cost less, but if you get a big pumpkin with a flat side and a large stem – you can always lay it on its side and display the stem as the pumpkins nose

Before carving – set your pumpkin on plenty of newspaper

Your knife should be long enough to cut through the shell but not go through the other side of the pumpkin

Draw your face on with a pencil

Do you want round or triangle eyes?

If you keep the pieces you cut out, you can use a couple of bread ties and make your pumpkin look like he has floating eyeballs by cutting out and attaching round eyeballs with the wires from the bread ties on the inside of the pumpkin

Do you want eyebrows to give him character or make him look mean?

Do you want a circle mouth, making the pumpkin look afraid or jagged teeth to make him mean or square teeth and a big smile? – straw added to square teeth can make him look like he has braces

Draw a circle and carve your lid on an inward angle – so the lid will not fall inside the pumpkin

Turn the pumpkin on its side and remove the insides of the pumpkin.
My pumpkins insides go straight into the trash – but some people use them for pies, soups or toast the seeds

Scooping out the insides is not always an easy job – most of the insides - you can get out with your hands and then I suggest you use an ice cream scoop – scrape the inside of the lid also

Now, carve the face at an angle to make the holes on the inside of the pumpkin wider than the outside holes

Sprinkle carved pumpkin with ground cinnamon - to make it last longer and smell good

All Done – I hope you and others enjoy your pumpkins

Favorite Magazines (Post 218)

We each have our own list of favorite magazines; I order quite a few magazines through the mail, so in my ten cent crazy book I keep a list of my favorite magazines. I put a check next to those that come in the mail and list those that I buy at the checkout stand. If I notice that I’m purchasing the same magazine over and over, I will order a subscription. I just ordered a magazine for fifteen bucks – which I will receive every month for three years. In the store – I was paying 3.99 a month – I just saved myself $129 bucks over the next three years on one magazine.

My favorite magazines

Women’s Day
Ladies Home Journal
Good Housekeeping
Rachael Ray
Food Network
Real Simple
Martha Stewart Living
Better Homes and Gardens
Semi-Homemade
Family Circle
Southern Living

List your magazines and keep track of how often you buy them.
It can save you a lot of money to get them through the mail.
(Hint-don’t use a credit card to pay for a subscription – always check the (bill me later) box and when the bill comes – write a check and mail it in. The reason – a lot of magazines will just continue to charge your credit card year after year and continue your subscription forever, regardless of how much their cost increases – unless you cancel the subscription – and this may be difficult, since your credit card has already been charged) Plus, if you write a check and let the subscription run out – you can sometimes get a better deal, starting a new subscription – and if you decide you like another magazine better – you may want to order it instead.

Well, October is upon us and all the ghost and goblins are out to have fun. Did you know that October 6 is mad hatter day? The next time you watch "Alice in Wonderland" or read the book - look for the big 10/6 on the mad hatter's hat - of course it is said that perhaps this is the style and size of the hat, but in any case, someone decided that it must be the day to act like the mad hatter and just be silly all day (not that some of us need an excuse to be silly all day)

Fruits and Vegetables that are in season during October

Kitchen Hints (Post 216)

Here are some fun kitchen hints to add to your ten cent crazy book

Watery Soup – mix together, one tablespoon of butter and some flour – whisk it into the soup

If something is to salty add sugar

If your coffee is bitter, add a pinch of salt

If you don’t know how old your eggs are – put them in a bowl of water – a rotten egg will float to the top

Do you have any plastic bowls with lids? – Fill them half full of water and keep lettuce or celery in them – it will stay fresh and crispy in the fridge for what seems like forever

Is your chili to spicy? – add a can of crushed pineapple

Is your sauce to sweet? – add a little lemon juice

Hard cookies – wrap them in a paper towel with a few slices of apple and microwave for about 5 seconds

When measuring anything sticky (syrup, honey etc.) spray your measuring cup or spoon with oil, everything will slip right out and you will get every drop

Each year, I teach at least one person to core lettuce – this to me is amazing. When you get home with that next head of lettuce, remove it from the package - remove the outside leafs and bang the hard flat core side onto a table or kitchen counter – probably just once, maybe twice, - you will probably feel it break – Now turn the lettuce over and with your thumb and fingertips – twist the core – it should come right out – and the whole rest of the head of lettuce can be cut up and used – of course put it in your plastic bowl of water – in the fridge and it will last until you need it.

RECIPES (Post 214)

Here are a few new easy recipes that I’ve been making that you can add to your ten cent crazy book.

FRENCH ONION DIP BURGERS

Mix about 2 cups of frozen chopped onions and peppers into about one pound of hamburger meat.

Should make 5 or 6 good size burgers.

Cook burgers until almost done and then remove from frying pan.

Pour two cans of French Onion soup into pan along with a cup of chopped onions and peppers, and then place hamburgers into soup to finish cooking.

When burgers are done put them on toasted buns / cheese and condiments optional.

Now pour soup mixture from pan into bowls and serve on the side to dip sandwiches in (really delicious)

CINNAMON TOASTED ROLL UPS

Mix one 8oz pkg of softened cream cheese with one cup of sugar.

Take several slices of bread and cut the crust off. Smash bread flat with your hands.

Spread Cream Cheese mixture on slices of bread –roll up and place on butter sprayed cookie sheet.

Spray bread roll-ups with butter spray and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.

If you don’t have cinnamon sugar – make your own by adding two tablespoons of sugar to every one tablespoon of cinnamon.

Bake at 350 degrees until the cheese begins to melt out from roll-up.

SAUSAGE BALLS

Mix in bowl with hands – one pound of sausage – two cups of shredded cheddar cheese and one cup of Bisquick.

Will make about 50 to 60 sausage balls.

Place on sprayed cooking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes – take out – turn over and bake another 20 minutes.

Whether in the US or the UK if you were listening to the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones or Motown sound on your transistor radio or headed to Woodstock you are a baby boomer.

If you were buying the world a coke you are a baby boomer.

If you're a boomer born from 46 to 55 you will remember:

the assassinations of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr.
you remember the walk on the moon
draft into the Vietnam War
anti-war protests
sexual freedom
drug experimentation
the civil rights movement
the women's movement
riots
Woodstock
Beatlemania
Jimi Hendrix
R and B of Motown.

If you're a boomer born from 56 to 64 you will remember:

Watergate
the lowering of the drinking age in many states (followed by the raising of it)
disco music
Donna Summer
The Bee Gees
Punk and new wave music
The Jackson Five
The Osmond Brothers
Sergent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

As "baby boomers" you may have developed a rebellious, anti-establishment attitude which has been carried on into older age - which is very different to previous society and late 20th century lack of interest in things like the civil rights movement, the feminist cause in the 1970s, gay rights, handicapped rights, and the right to privacy.

Gild The Lily or A Hat Trick (Post 212)

Old expressions sometimes come out wrong - have you ever heard someone say don't "Gild The Lily" or he just did "A Hat Trick" and wonder what they meant? Here's a couple of expressions and their meanings to add to your ten cent crazy book

"Gild The Lily"

To gild means to cover something with a thin layer of gold - in an old play - Shakespeare talks about gilding a crown that's already gold or painting a Lily that's already beautiful or adding perfume to a violet that already smells wonderful - but through the years the expression was changed and shortened - first to "Painting The Lily" and than finally shortened to don't "Gild The Lily". In other words - don't add to something that's already perfect.

"A Hat Trick"

I always thought that "A Hat Trick" had something to do with a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat and had only heard the expression around horse racing (such as the same horse winning the triple crown), but "A Hat Trick" can occur in any sport when three consecutive goals are scored - it seems that this expression goes back to 1858 in a cricket game - but it became a popular saying in 1967 when a hat store in Montreal offered a free hat to any hockey player scoring three goals during a game in Montreal - of course at the time there were only six NHL teams.

Nail Polish (Post 210)

We all know that clear nail polish can be used to repair a nylon and keep a snag, from becoming a huge run in your pantyhose, but here is a list for your ten cent crazy book of other uses for nail polish.

Quick-Fix Glue
Apply some clear nail polish to secure screws, or re-set jewelry stones.

Label Toxic Materials and Supplies
Mark a big bold 'X' on all poisons in the house.

Mark Your Thermostat
Paint a thin, colored nail polish line to mark the right setting.

Prevent Screws, Nuts and Bolts From Rusting
Use clear nail polish to prevent rusting. This is particularly useful for outdoor picnic tables or other areas when the metal is exposed to the elements.

Smooth Wooden Hangers
Apply a clear coat of nail polish to the rough areas.

Stop Fabric From Fraying
Tame frayed fabric by brushing the ends with clear nail polish. You can also add a drop of clear nail polish to the back side of buttons to keep them from falling off.

Mark Levels on a Bucket
Use a bright colored nail polish to clearly mark levels on a bucket.

Avoid Rust Rings
Paint some nail polish along the bottom ring of metal containers (think hair spray bottles) so they don't leave rust marks on your counter.

Fill Scratches on Wood Floor
Fill little nicks with clear nail polish. Rub the polish down with sand paper to dull the shine.

Repair a Window Screen
It might not be the prettiest fix, but it will stop that tiny hole from growing into a major problem.

To spruce up a mirror in a child’s bedroom, you can paint colorful characters around the edge of the mirror and they can be removed and updated with nail polish remover as the child grows. You can also paint fish and shells or even a lighthouse on bathroom mirrors and remove when you grow tired of them.

Use hats and sunglasses

Try to stay in the shade – take a beach umbrella to the beach or keep a small colorful umbrella in the car for those unexpected long walks or rain shower

Try to go swimming early in the morning or late in the afternoon

Take vitamin E

Drink lots of water

Remember the sun causes painful sunburns, skin damage, skin cancer and premature aging – so protect your skin

The Royal Wedding (Post 203)

Well, the wedding of the century is scheduled for April this 29th at Westminster Abby. Here's a few things about this Royal Wedding to add to your ten cent crazy book that you probably didn't know, but will love amazing your friends with your knowledge.

Even before Prince William could propose to Kate, William first had to seek the approval of his grandmother. This tradition began back in 1772 with the passing of The Royal Marriages Act, a doctrine that requires all descendants of the throne to get the sovereign ruler's blessing for marriage

Over 1 Billion people are expected to watch the wedding.

It is predicted that this one event will boost the British Economy by 995 million dollars.

Kate's 18 carat sapphire engagement ring is estimated to be worth $398,000

Kate, will almost certainly have a sprig of myrtle in her bouquet, as it is a tradition that royal brides have carried on since 1840

Kate and William will also likely have their wedding rings fashioned from Welsh gold, another historical tradition that dates back to 1923. Welsh gold has a pink tinge to it and is [very] rare and precious.

Kate and William have been dating for 8 years.
Church bells are rung at the beginning of the ceremony to ward off bad spirits.

A flower girl leads the wedding procession and throws out orange blossoms along the wedding aisle. The scattering of orange blossoms are thought to prepare the couple for a long and happy life together.

Each of the 1,900 wedding guest have been sent a 22 page guide of do's and don't's

Keep your phone on silent

Don't wear white or cream

Arrive at least 20 minutes before the ceremony

When the Queen passes a guest - either coming in or leaving - the guest must curtsey or bow

When meeting address the Queen as Your Majesty, in conversation you may address her as Ma'am

Men in armed services should wear their uniform

Civilian men should wear a lounge or morning suit

Guest will include politicians, foreign royals, stars such as Sir Elton John and the Beckhams and villagers from Bucklebury, Berks, where Kate’s parents Michael and Carole live.
The royal bride and groom will receive thousands of wedding gifts, ranging from the lavish to more humble offerings. Most of the wedding gifts will be given away by the bride and groom and some will be put on display for the public to view shortly after the wedding

Kate and William will ride through London in an open carriage after their wedding at Westminster Abbey

Back at Buckingham Palace they will almost certainly appear on the balcony for a royal wave and newlywed kiss.

Private catering staff waiting on the guests also have a strict protocol to follow.

They have been told not to look at Kate, the Queen or any of the royals while serving. They must keep their heads down and be as discreet as possible.

Hopefully guest at the reception will know to hold their champagne glasses by the stem

With tea cups, lift the cup not the saucer and hold it very gently with your index finger and thumb, returning the cup to the saucer after every sip.
The pair is expected to return to their residence in Wales, near Prince William's Royal Air Force base.

Once his active duty is completed the married duo will move to a home in Herefordshire that was built for them by Prince Charles.

As for titles, the couple will become known as the Prince and Princess of Wales, the official title given to the heir to the throne.

Peeps (Post 202)

Do you love those little marshmallow Peeps that seem to be everywhere this time of year?

Well, here's some things to add to your ten cent crazy book that you probably didn't know about Peeps.

Peeps are marshmallow candies, sold in the United States and Canada

Peeps are shaped into chicks, bunnies, and other animals.

There are also different shapes used for various holidays.

Peeps are used primarily to fill Easter baskets, though recent ad campaigns advertise the candy as

"Peeps - Always in Season".

They are made from marshmallow, corn syrup, gelatin, and carnauba wax

Peeps are made by candy manufacturer "Just Born" located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

In 1953, its marshmallow chick line, then turned the tedious process of hand-forming the chicks to mass production. The yellow chicks were the original form of the candy — hence their name — Peeps

Did you know that you can now get Peeps Lip Balm in four flavors: grape, strawberry, vanilla, and cotton candy?

The first Peeps & Co. store opened in November 2009 in Prince George's County.

An annual "Peep Off" competition is held in Maryland on the first Saturday after Easter, when Peeps are greatly discounted, to see who can eat the most in 30 minutes. The record is 102 Peeps eaten.

Arbor Day (Post 200)

Arbor day this year is April 29th. Arbor Day in the U.S. is always the last Friday in April. Americans have celebrated Arbor Day since 1872 when an estimated 1 million trees were planted that year. So if you plan on planting a tree this year -Here's a list for your ten cent crazy book of exactly how.

First- think about the size the tree will grow to be and check the surroundings for power lines, buildings or other trees that could cause a problem.

Next - Dig a hole as deep as the root-ball and two or three times as wide

Now remove the tree from the container you bought it in - take it out of the pot or cut away any burlap, wire or bag - untangle the roots and straighten as many as you can.

Put the tree in the hole and make sure that the root flare - between the root ball and the trunk of the tree - should be two inches above the existing soil

Fill the hole around the tree with the soil you removed to make the hole - pack firmly

Make a moat around the top of the root ball and fill with water twice

Put a two inch layer of mulch around the new tree - do not touch the trunk with the mulch

Make sure your new tree is watered well at least once a week during spring and summer of it's first year

Some great shade trees are:
Elm
Magnolia
Maple
Red Oak

Salt (Post 199)

There are about 14,000 ways to use Salt - here's a list of just a few to add to your ten cent crazy book

Laundry

Attack wine spills
If a tipsy guest tips wine on your cotton or linen tablecloth, blot up as much as possible and immediately cover the wine with a pile of salt, which will help pull the remaining wine away form the fiber. After dinner, soak the tablecloth in cold water for 30 minutes before laundering. (Also works on clothing.)

Quell oversudsing.
Since, of course, we are all very careful in how much detergent we use in our laundry, we never have too many suds. But if someone overfills ... you can eliminate excess suds with a sprinkle of salt.

Dry clothes in the winter.
Use salt in the final laundry rinse to prevent clothes from freezing if you use an outdoor clothes line in the winter.

Brighten colors.
Wash colored curtains or washable fiber rugs in a saltwater solution to brighten the colors. Brighten faded rugs and carpets by rubbing them briskly with a cloth that has been dipped in a strong saltwater solution and wrung out.

Remove perspiration stains.
Add four tablespoons of salt to one quart of hot water and sponge the fabric with the solution until stains fade.

Remove blood stains.
Soak the stained cloth in cold saltwater, then launder in warm, soapy water and boil after the wash. (Use only on cotton, linen, or other natural fibers that can take high heat.)

Tackle mildew or rust stains.
Moisten stained spots with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, then spread the item in the sun for bleaching -- then rinse and dry.

Clean a gunky iron bottom.
Sprinkle a little salt on a piece of paper and run the hot iron over it to remove rough, sticky spots.

Set color.
Salt is used commonly in the textile industry, but works at home too. If a dye isn't colorfast, soak the garment for an hour in 1/2 gallon of water to which you've added 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup salt, then rinse. If rinse water has any color in it, repeat. Use only on single-colored fabric or madras. If the item is multicolored, dry-clean it to avoid running all of the colors together.

Cleaning

Salt works as an effective yet gentle scouring agent. Salt also serves as a catalyst for other ingredients, such as vinegar, to boost cleaning and deodorizing action. For a basic soft scrub, make a paste with lots of salt, baking soda and dish soap and use on appliances, enamel, porcelain, etc.

Clean sink drains.
Pour salt mixed with hot water down the kitchen sink regularly to deodorize and keep grease from building up.

Remove water rings.
Gently rub a thin paste of salt and vegetable oil on the white marks caused by beverage glasses and hot dishes on wooden tables.

Clean greasy pans.
Cast-iron skillets can be cleaned with a good sprinkling of salt and paper towels.

Clean stained cups.
Mix salt with a dab of dish soap to make a soft scrub for stubborn coffee and tea stains.

Clean refrigerators.
A mix of salt and soda water can be used to wipe out and deodorize the inside of your refrigerator, a nice way to keep chemical-y cleaners away from your food.

Clean brass or copper.
Mix equal parts of salt, flour, and vinegar to make a paste, and rub the paste on the metal. After letting it sit for an hour, clean with a soft cloth or brush and buff with a dry cloth.

Clean rust.
Mix salt and cream of tartar with just enough water to make a paste. Rub on rust, let dry, brush off and buff with a dry, soft cloth. You can also use the same method with a mix of salt and lemon.

Clean a glass coffee pot.
Every diner waitress' favorite tip: add salt and ice cubes to a coffee pot, swirl around vigorously, and rinse. The salt scours the bottom, and the ice helps to agitate it more for a better scrub.

Around the House

Deter ants.
Sprinkle salt at doorways, window sills, and anywhere else ants sneak into your house. Ants don't like to walk on salt.

Extinguish grease fires.
Keep a box of salt near your stove and oven, and if a grease fire flares up, douse the flames with salt. (Never use water on grease fires; it will splatter the burning grease.) When salt is applied to fire, it acts like a heat sink and dissipates the heat from the fire -- it also forms an oxygen-excluding crust to smother the fire.

Drip-proof candles.
If you soak new candles in a strong salt solution for a few hours, then dry them well, they will not drip as much when you burn them.

Keep cut flowers fresh.
A dash of salt added to the water in a flower vase will keep cut flowers fresh longer. (You can also try an aspirin or a dash of sugar for the same effect.)

Arrange artificial flowers.
Artificial flowers can be held in place by pouring salt into the vase, adding a little cold water and then arranging the flowers. The salt become solid as it dries and holds the flowers in place.

Make play dough.
Use 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons oil, and 2 tablespoons cream of tartar. Stir together flour, cream of tartar, salt, and oil, and slowly add water. Cook over medium heat stirring frequently until dough becomes stiff. Spread onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the dough with your hands until it reaches a good dough consistency. (Read about juice dyes here.)

Repair walls.
To fill nail holes, fix chips or other small dings in white sheet-rock or plaster walls, mix 2 tablespoons salt and 2 tablespoons cornstarch, then add enough water (about 5 teaspoons) to make a thick paste. Use the paste to fill the holes.

Deter patio weeds.
If weeds or grass grow between bricks or blocks in your patio, sidewalk, or driveway, carefully spread salt between the cracks, then sprinkle with water or wait for rain to wet it down.

Kill poison ivy.
Mix three pounds of salt with a gallon of soapy water (use a gentle dish soap) and apply to leaves and stems with a sprayer, avoiding any plant life that you want to keep.

De-ice sidewalks and driveways.
One of the oldest tricks in the book! Lightly sprinkle rock salt on walks and driveways to keep snow and ice from bonding to the pavement and allow for easier shoveling/scraping. But don't overdo it; use the salt sensibly to avoid damage to plants and paws.

Tame a wild barbecue.
Toss a bit of salt on flames from food dripping in barbecue grills to reduce the flames and calm the smoke without cooling the coals (like water does).

Personal Care

Extend toothbrush life.
Soak toothbrushes in salt water before your first use; they'll last longer.

Clean teeth.
Use one part fine salt to two parts baking soda -- dip your toothbrush in the mix and brush as usual. You can also use the same mix dissolved in water for orthodontic appliances.

Rinse your mouth.
Mix equal parts salt and baking soda in water for a fresh and deodorizing mouth rinse.

Ease mouth problems.
For cankers, abscesses, and other mouth sores, rinse your mouth with a weak solution of warm saltwater several times a day.

Relieve bee-sting pain.
Ouch? Immediately dampen area and pack on a small pile of salt to reduce pain and swelling. More bee-sting tips here.

Treat mosquito bites.
A saltwater soak can do wonders for that special mosquito-bite itch -- a poultice of salt mixed with olive oil can help too.

Treat poison ivy.
Same method as for treating mosquito bites. (Salt doesn't seem to distinguish between itches.)

Have an exfoliating massage.
After bathing and while still wet give yourself a massage with dry salt. It freshens skin and boosts circulation.

Ease throat pain.
Mix salt and warm water, gargle to relieve a sore throat.

In the Kitchen

Aside from all of the alchemy that salt performs in terms of baking chemistry and food flavor, salt has a number of other great applications in the kitchen.

Test egg freshness.
Put two teaspoons of salt in a cup of water and place an egg in it -- a fresh egg will sink, an older egg will float. Because the air cell in an egg increases as it ages, an older egg is more buoyant. This doesn't mean a floating egg is rotten, just more mature. Crack the egg into a bowl and examine it for any funky odor or appearance -- if it's rotten, your nose will tell you. (Bonus fact: if you have hard-boiled eggs that are difficult to peel, that means they are fresh!)

Set poached eggs.
Because salt increases the temperature of boiling water, it helps to set the whites more quickly when eggs are dropped into the water for poaching.

Prevent fruits from browning.
Most of us use lemon or vinegar to stop peeled apples and pears from browning, but you can also drop them in lightly salted water to help them keep their color.

Shell nuts more easily.
Soak pecans and walnuts in salt water for several hours before shelling to make it easier to remove the meat.

Prevent cake icing crystals.
A little salt added to cake icings prevents them from sugaring.

Remove odors from hands.
Oniony-garlicy fingers? I like soap and water, then rubbing them on anything made of stainless steel (it really works), but you can also rub your fingers with a salt and vinegar combo.

Reach high peaks.
Add a tiny pinch of salt when beating egg whites or whipping cream for quicker, higher peaks.

Extend cheese life.
Prevent mold on cheese by wrapping it in a cloth moistened with saltwater before refrigerating.

Save the bottom of your oven.
If a pie or casserole bubbles over in the oven, put a handful of salt on top of the spill. It won't smoke and smell, and it will bake into a crust that makes the baked-on mess much easier to clean when it has cooled.

Recipe Box (Post 195)

Would you like to know how to start a good old fashion recipe box? Here's what you'll need and how to do it -so add this project to your ten cent crazy book.

Some of you have a recipe box, but others have never had one.

If you do already have a recipe box, I would bet (unless you're a great cook) that your recipe box is really old, and either falling apart or overstuffed with tons of pieces of paper sticking out of it with recipes in no kind of order at all.

Ok, so whether you have a recipe box or not this is a great fun, easy project, that you can make for yourself, your newly moved out son or daughter or a wedding gift for a friend.

Something to know-
If you go to the store to buy a recipe box, you will probably not find one.

They used to be in the kitchen section of the store and made out of wood, with a cute little rooster on them.

Now you will have to go to the school supply section and buy a plastic box; it has a lid that snaps shut and holds 3 x 5 or larger index cards- that can be purchased in the same section.
Also, if this box doesn't come with ABC dividers they should be in the same isle as the box or the index cards.

Now you're ready, the next time you're sitting and watching television, you can work on your recipe box.

Get out those old cookbooks and look through them for whatever looks good to you.

On the front of the index card, you should write:

The Name of the recipe at the top

Then list the ingredients down the left front of the card

In the right bottom corner write the oven temperature suggested and the time it will take to cook.
Also put the size of the dish needed.
Example: 350 for 30 min in a 9 x 13 pan.

On the back of the card write the mixing and cooking instructions.

Save the right front of the card for comments, such as (really good or really sweet)

If you don't have old cookbooks to look through, your friends will probably loan you some or you can get recipes from magazines, this blog, television which is full of cooking shows- or of course the Internet is full of recipes.

You can jot down the recipes in your ten cent crazy book and try them out, before actually putting them on a card for your box, because you may not like the recipe, or you may decide it needs more sugar or it needs to be cooked a little longer.

So......sit with your crazy book and scribble recipes all over the place and then put the really good recipes in your new recipe box, and enjoy this project.

St. Patrick's Day (Post 192)

Thursday March 17th is St. Patrick's Day -so be sure to remember to wear something green, because everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Here's some things to add to your ten cent crazy book that may or may not be true but make the day fun.

Wearing Green

Ireland is called the Emerald Isle because of it's rolling green hillsides - so wearing green on St. Patrick's Day is supposed to bring a person luck, and if you don't wear green - you rune the rick of being pinched.

Shamrocks and St. Patrick

It is said that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to non-Christians by referring to the leaves as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit attached to the stem of God -
St. Patrick is also given the credit of banishing snakes from Ireland although there is no evidence that any snakes ever existed in Ireland.
St. Patrick died on March 17th 461AD and this is why we celebrate on March 17th

Four Leaf Clovers

The four leaf clover is a non-religious symbol and differs from the shamrock in that each leaf represents a different concept. The first leaf symbolizes hope, the second faith, the third love, and the fourth happiness. If someone finds a four leaf clover, it is thought to bring extreme luck.

Leprechauns

A leprechaun is an Irish fairy with magical powers that can be used for either good or evil. Leprechauns hide their coins in a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If the leprechaun is captured, the Leprechaun must grant that person three wishes in order to be released. Leprechauns are said to be shoe cobblers.

Blarney Stone

Kissing the Blarney Stone is supposed to give the kisser the gift of blarney (persuasive eloquence). You’ll have to travel to Ireland to kiss the Blarney Stone. It is a stone in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the village of Blarney

Financial Skills (Post 190)

Are you terrible at Financial Skills? Do you always spend every dime you make? Well, here's a list for your ten cent crazy book on how to always have plenty and balance your budget, or how to keep a budget if you don't know how.

Get out the calculator

First you must be able to figure out a percentage
so for an example lets say you make a thousand dollars a month take home pay
put 1000 in the calculator multiple x 35
your answer will be 35000
fine - put in the decimal point 350.00
35 percent of 1000 is three hundred and fifty bucks

Here's the list of how your money should be spent
Take the total of your monthly take home pay and multiple times the percentage

Rent 35%
Car 15%
Savings 10%
Sharing !0%
Food 12%
Insurance 5%
Fun 5%
Clothing 5%
Debt 3%
(Remember % total should always equal 100%)

If you're paying more than these percentages you're paying too much for how much money you make
Rent should include utilities - gas, electric, phone, water and cable anything needed for the home
Car should include - gas, repairs, oil changes etc.
Insurance should include car and home
If you don't fit into these percentages - don't worry about it - most people don't
Maybe your car is 20% fine make your savings 5%
Just figure out what you can afford to reduce and add to - but always try to remember what percentage you should be paying - the next time you buy something.
You can take the total that you can afford to spend on food, fun or clothing and divide it by 2 if you shop twice a month or divide it by 30 and figure out how much you can afford to spend daily - you will probably think twice about that five dollar cup of coffee or a ten dollar lunch.

A Few Simple Beauty Tips (Post 187)

Here's some simple beauty tips to add to your ten cent crazy book that you probably never thought about

Skin

Over age we develop wrinkles, these wrinkles are caused by the drying out of our skin. While wrinkles and age may also represent wisdom, most would like to keep these wrinkles to as few as possible. Now you can buy expensive creams, which may work well, but if its moisture you want to put back into your skin, try plain Vaseline. Rub Vaseline onto your face, hands, elbows and knees, before your next shower. The pours of your skin, will take in the moisture, and no matter how much you scrub and wash during your shower, your skin will love you for renewing its youth.

Lips

The next time you apply lipstick, apply a brush of blush on top of it. Your lipstick will stay on longer

Eyes

Before applying eye shadow put some chap stick on your eye lids, your eye shadow will stay on longer

Mardi Gras (Post 184)

This Tuesday, March 8th is Mardi Gras - So here's some things to know and add to your ten cent crazy book about Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras actually means "Fat Tuesday".

"Fat Tuesday" is the last big feast before (Lent) the forty days before Easter.

Lent is an Old English word that means spring

Forty days because of bible references:
Moses was on the mountain forty days.
Elijah traveled for forty days before hearing the still, small voice of God.
Jesus was in the wilderness praying, for forty days

People usually give up something for Lent - such as smoking, drinking alcohol, soft drinks or coffee, cussing, eating chocolate or any bad habit -kids can give up things like TV, video games or computer games.
The thought is that by giving up things we free ourselves from dependence on them and make ourselves better people by reminding us of the importance of spiritual growth not material growth.

In New Orleans, Mardi Gras celebrations are centered on the neighborhood known as the French Quarter.

King Cakes are large, round cinnamon rolls covered with white icing and a popular Mardi Gras tradition. Hidden inside the cake is a plastic or metal baby. The person that gets the piece of cake with the baby inside, is said to be the King or Queen and have good luck for the next year, and is obligated to buy next year’s King Cake.

Mardi Gras colors are purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power.

People line the Mardi Gras parade routes, to catch prizes of gold coins, known as doubloons and strings of beads thrown by people riding on the floats.

These prizes can be kept for souvenirs or traded for merchandise in many New Orleans businesses
