Reseason An Iron Frying Pan (Post 69)

If you would like to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

Ok, most of us have an iron frying pan that we have been using for years and years. Well, chances are that this pan was seasoned when you bought it. In some cases years ago - a girls' mother would give the girl an iron frying pan as a wedding gift - with advice on how to use this pan if her husband ever got too mean, and advice on how to cook cornbread in it for him, if he was kind. In any case the pan, when bought - was seasoned - this helps to keep foods from sticking and also keeps the pan from rusting over time. Anyone who has ever received advice on iron cookware - will know not to ever put it in the dishwasher - this will remove the seasoning and cause it to rust - so whether you have a new pan or are going to reseason an old one - always wash it by hand and dry it with heat on the stove burner.
In any case - here's some advice to add to your ten cent crazy book.on how to season a frying pan -
and a cornbread recipe for those of you with a kind husband.

To reseason pan:
preheat oven at 350 degrees
wash pan and use a metal brush to remove rust if needed
dry pan well
cover the entire pan - inside and out with vegetable oil
place pan upside down on a piece of foil in the oven
Bake for 1 hour
Remove and set on stove burner to cool

Iron Frying Pan Cornbread Recipe

preheat oven at 425 degrees

Mix
2 cups of yellow self-rising cornmeal mix
1 and a half cups milk
1 large egg
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons sugar

pour a little oil into the bottom of your newly seasoned pan,
and tilt and coat the bottom and sides evenly
Pour mixture into pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes
should be beautiful golden color and toothpick should come out clean
After removing from oven -
It is usually best to place an upside down plate on top of the pan - put one hand on the bottom of the plate and one on the pan handle and flip the cornbread onto plate while still hot- of course use a pot holder- cornbread will usually not stick to the pan while hot

Enjoy the pan and enjoy the cornbread

A New Project (Post 63)

If you would like to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

Here's a new project to add to your ten cent crazy book. As always, I try to pick a project that's easy and enjoyable.

Buy a new address book and take all those scraps of paper you have shoved in that old address book that you've been keeping for years and years - you know - the one with people whose names are scratched through because they died or moved ten years ago. Now when you're sitting around watching an old movie - transfer those good address' to your new book. If you don't have an address book - start one - everyone needs to receive a card once in a while. How happy does it make you to open the mailbox and realize that someone has sent you a birthday card - or get well card - or Christmas card. My aunt once sent my children a thinking of you card, with pieces of gum in the card -they were so happy - you would have thought someone had sent them a million dollars, after all, it is the thought that counts.
Most places that sell address books, also sell Dates to Remember books - these are about the same size as the address books and they're designed like a big calendar book, and you can write everyone's name on the date of their birthday or anniversary. It may take you a year to fill out your dates to remember book, but start asking all your friends and relatives - their address', their birthday, their anniversary and their children's birthday's. It won't take long and your list will grow and grow and you will become the card giving queen or king.
Now you might be saying - why? - I just send e-cards and save the postage - Well there our two reasons to spend the money on the postage -
First - It's so great to get a handwritten card from a friend or relative in the mailbox - it shows that you really care and that they were not just an afterthought, also it's so fun to receive a card in the midst of all those bills and advertisements.
Second - begin sending Christmas Cards while you are young and when your family grows - be sure to include pictures - this helps friends who move away or family that don't live close by - feel like they are part of your life. - as your children grow - these are the people you will send those high school and college graduation invitations and later wedding and birth announcements.

So get started on this fun great project

Ways To Be Positive (Post 61)

If you would like to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1- to fine out how

All of us would like to be happy all of the time - this is not reality, but here's a list to add to your ten cent crazy book, that will hopefully remind you of way to remain positive

Choose to be optimistic (say to yourself that everything will be ok - no matter what happens)

Accept things - We can only change ourselves - and the way we
view things - we cannot change others or
things that have already happened

Be resilient - You might have a bad day - learn to bounce back - have
a "things can only get better attitude

Be cheerful - Put on a smile - someone else may need it- people like to
be around happy people

Be enthusiastic - it rubs off on others

Be alert - try to avoid anyone that's in a bad mood

Have a sense of humor - laugh and laugh some more

Be a good sport - acknowledge when someone else did well and be happy for them

Be humble - resist tooting your own horn

Be grateful - think of five things that happen each day, that you are
grateful for, even if it's:
I woke up this morning
I made it to work
I made it home
The dog's glad to see me
My bed feels good

Have Faith - Things will always be better tomorrow

Have Hope - Hope that today will be great, and if not - maybe
tomorrow

Lose Weight (Post 58)

If you would like to start a ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

Well, everyone always seems to want to lose a few pounds - Here's a list of things to add to your ten cent crazy book on how to lose a few pounds, without thinking about it to much

1. Write down what you eat

2. Sleep Well

3. Sit at a table and enjoy your food - with no distractions ( yes this means no TV while eating)

4. Exercise (duh!)

5. Leave at least one bite of everything

6. No buffets - not breakfast, lunch, supper and especially no soup and salad bars - we eat way to much when "all you can eat" is an option.

7. If you are hungry eat something - if you wait to long - you will give up and overeat

I once heard of a group of people, that had agreed not to eat until their stomach growled, and then they could eat anything they wanted for 30 minutes, and they were losing weight - I have tried this (to hard for me - and probably not healthy)

Good Luck!!

Favorite Actors (Post 57)

If you would like to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

All of us have our favorite types of movies or televisions shows that we like to watch, but what I suggest you do - is add a list of actors to your ten cent crazy book. Those actors that you know, no matter what - you would probably watch whatever they are in. We are all a little choosy when buying a DVD, because we know that we will probably watch it again and again over time and why buy something that doesn't have one of your favorite actors, but when you go to rent a DVD, you might wonder whether the movie you're going to rent will be worth watching - well once you have your actor list written down, not only will you know in a second if someone you really like is in the DVD, but you can give a copy of the list to anyone going to rent a DVD and say - I'll watch anything with any of these actors. Or better yet, if someone wants ideas of what to get you for your birthday or Christmas - give them the list, DVD's don't cost a load and you will love whatever they buy.

Here's my list for now

Women I will watch, no matter what they're in:

Michelle Phifer
Sandra Bullock
Julia Roberts
Joan Cusack
Diane Keaton
Meryl Streep
Ellen Degeneres
Jennifer Aniston
Whoopi Goldberg
Sally Field
Helen Hunt
Meg Ryan
Goldie Hawn

Just to name a few-

Men I will watch, no matter what they're in:

Robin Williams
Jim Carrey
Kevin Spacy
Adam Sandler
Will Smith
John Cusack
Woody Allen
Steve Martin
Johnny Deep
Tom Hanks
George Clooney
Owen Wilson
Danny Devito
Michael Keaton
Richard Dreyfuss
Neil Patrick Harris

Both list will go up and down over time, depending on your moods, but it's always fun to know what you really like.

Favorite Magazines (Post 55)

If you want to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

We each have our own list of favorite magazines, I order quite a few magazines through the mail, so in my ten cent crazy book I keep a list of my favorite magazines. I put a check next to those that come in the mail and list those that I buy at the checkout stand. If I notice that I'm purchasing the same magazine over and over, I will order a subscription. I just ordered a magazine for fifteen bucks - which I will receive every month for three years. In the store - I was paying 3.99 a month.

My favorite magazines:

Women's Day
Ladies Home Journal
Good Housekeeping
Rachael Ray
Food Network
Real Simple
Oprah
Martha Stewart Living
Better Homes and Gardens
Shop
Marie Claire
Semi-Homemade
Family Circle

List your magazines and keep track of how often you buy them.
It can save you a lot of money to get them through the mail.
(Hint - don't use a credit card to pay for a subscription - always check the bill me later box and when the bill comes - write a check and mail it in. The reason - a lot of magazines will just continue to charge your credit card year after year and continue your subscription forever, regardless of how much their cost increases - unless you cancel the subscription - and this may be difficult, since your credit card has already been charged.) Plus, if you write a check and let the subscription run out - you can sometimes get a better deal, starting a new subscription - and if you decide you like another magazine better you may want to order it instead.

Kitchen Hints (Post 54)

If you want to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

Here's some fun kitchen hints to add to your ten cent crazy book

Watery Soup - mix together, one tablespoon of butter and some flour - whisk it into the soup

If something is to salty add sugar

If your coffee is bitter, add a pinch of salt

If you don't know how old your eggs are - put them in a bowl of water - a rotten egg will float to the top

Do you have any plastic bowls with lids? - Fill them half full with water and keep lettuce or celery in them - it will stay fresh and crispy in the fridge for what seems like forever.

Is your chili to spicy? - add a can of crushed pineapple.

Is your sauce to sweet? - add a little lemon juice

Hard cookies - wrap in a paper towel with a few slices of apple and microwave for about 5 seconds

When measuring anything sticky (syrup, honey etc.) spray your measuring cup with oil, everything will slip right out.

Every year, I teach at least one person to core lettuce - this to me is amazing. When you get home with that next head of lettuce, remove it from the package, remove the outside leafs and bang the hard flat core side onto a table or kitchen counter - probably just once, maybe twice, you will probably feel it break. Now turn the lettuce over and with your thumb and fingertips, twist the core - it should come right out, and the whole rest of the head of lettuce can be cut up and used or of course put it in your plastic bowl of water, in the fridge and it will last until you need it.

September (Post 52)

If you would like to start your own ten cent crazy book - read post 1-4 to find out how

Well, it's September and with school beginning, it's a great time to start your own ten cent crazy book.

Here's some things to add to your book about the month of September.

In September you should change your furnace filters, go play golf at fall rates, buy- grills and grill supplies, lawn mowers and patio furniture.

Eggplants and apples are in season.

And you should celebrate:

Grandparents Day on the 12th
International Chocolate Day on the 13th
Turn off your TV week the 19th - 25th
(this is really hard, because all the new fall shows are starting, but you can record them and they'll be so much better, when you can fast forward through all those commercials)
Don't forget
Love Note Day on the 24th - leave someone an "I Love You" note - even if you don't sign it - it will give them a smile.

You might wonder - What am I suppose to do, during the week of no TV? Well, you could read, play a board game, sew, bake - go for a walk or just sit outside and watch the neighborhood and see what everyone else is doing.
