Oscar Trivia (Post 174)
Whether you want to "WOW" your friends with your Oscar knowledge or ask them trivia questions - Here's a list of Oscar Trivia to add to your ten cent crazy book.
The youngest person to ever receive an Oscar was 5-year-old
Shirley Temple - in 1934.
(However, Shirley's Oscar was an honorary one.)
The youngest actress to win a standard Oscar was
Tatum O'Neal, who was 10 years old when she won the
Best Supporting Actress award for
"Paper Moon" in 1974.)
George Burns was the oldest Oscar winner when he won as
Best Supporting Actor for
"The Sunshine Boys" at age 80 (in 1976).
But that mark was later surpassed by
Jessica Tandy, who won her Best Actress Oscar at age 81 for
"Driving Miss Daisy."
The oldest actor to win the Oscar for Best Actor was
Henry Fonda, for
"On Golden Pond". He was 76.
The Three movies that won the most Oscars were
"Lord of the Rings; Return of the King" (2003),
"Titanic" (1997) and
"Ben-Hur" (1959). All three movies won 11 Oscars.
(Second place is held by "West Side Story," which won ten Oscars.)
The actress with the most Academy Awards for "Best Actress" is
Katharine Hepburn, who won four Oscars (in 1932, 1967, 1968 & 1981.)
The title for the most "Best Actor," awards, though, is
shared by seven different actors
(Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson,
Fredric March, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Hanks) who each won two Oscars.
The actor with the most total Oscar nominations is
Jack Nicholson, who was nominated 12 times
(winning three times - twice for Best Actor
and once for Best Supporting Actor.)
Meryl Streep now holds the record for the most
total Oscar nominations, with 16
(passing Katharine Hepburn, who had 12.
The individual who was awarded the most total Oscars was none other than
Walt Disney, who walked away with 26 Academy Awards over his lifetime.
He had 64 total Oscar nominations.
The longest acceptance speech ever given at an
Academy Awards ceremony was given by
Greer Garson, when she accepted her award for
Best Actress in 1942's
"Mrs. Miniver." It's uncertain exactly how long she spoke
- most sources agree it was somewhere
between 5 1/2 and 7 minutes.
The Oscar statuette weighs 6 3/4 pounds, and stands 13 1/2 inches high.
It was named by Margaret Herrick, the Academy librarian,
who remarked in 1931 (upon seeing the statuettes),
"Why it looks like my Uncle Oscar!"
(a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce).

National Pancake Day (Post 172)
Did you know that Feb. 24th is National Pancake Day? Here's some fun facts and some great pancake recipes to add to your ten cent crazy book.
Well, since 1950 the people of Liberal, Kansas, and Olney Kansas have held the "International Pancake Day" race between the two towns. The two towns' competitors race along an agreed-upon measured course. The times of the two towns' competitors are compared, to determine a winner overall. A similar race is held in North Somercotes of Lincolnshire in eastern England.
The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line while tossing the pancakes as they go. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number times.
The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney, England
in 1445 was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake.

President's Day and Cherry Bread (Post 171)
Do you want to wow someone with the things you know about President’s Day? Here are a few facts to add to your ten cent crazy book.- along with a nice Cherry Bread recipe.
The third Monday in February is Washington's Birthday, even though it’s more commonly known as President’s Day.
It’s not Officially President’s Day!
Instead, it is Washington's Birthday. There was an attempt in 1968 to officially name it President’s Day. However, this suggestion died in committee. Most states, however, choose to call this celebration "President’s Day."
Many people celebrated Washington's Birthday in the 17th century while
George Washington was still alive. However, it wasn't until 1885 that Chester Arthur signed the bill that made it a federal holiday.
Most states celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday with Washington's birthday.
Traditionally, many celebrated and continue to celebrate Washington's Birthday with desserts made with cherries. Cherry pie, cherry cake, bread made with cherries or just a huge bowl of cherries are often enjoyed on this day. Of course, this relates to the story that Washington would not tell a lie when asked if he cut down a cherry tree.
One thing that many people connect with Presidents Day is sales. In the 1980s, stores began to use this holiday as a time to clear out their old stock to prepare for spring and summer.
On February 22nd of almost every year since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read in the US Senate. While this does not happen on President’s Day, it is an annual celebration of Washington's Birthday that stems from 1862 when the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War. This address was and is so important because it warns of political factionalism, geographical sectionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation's affairs. Washington stressed the importance of national unity over sectional differences.

Bling (Post 161)
If you're thinking about giving someone jewelry for Valentine's Day, here's a list of things to know about jewelry, to go into your ten cent crazy book.
Diamonds
Look at:
Cut, Clarity, Color and Carats
The better the cut the more it shines
Look for a diamond that's not cloudy
The less yellow the better the diamond, and or course carat is the weight
Pearls
Look at:
Luster, Nacre, cleanliness, size and shape
Luster means you don't want pearls to be cloudy, you want to see your reflection Nacre is the internal part
Cleanliness again means color and luster
Size, bigger is better (and more expensive) but only if the shape is round Potato shaped small pearls can be pretty and less expensive
Gold
Look at:
Karatage, gram weight, craftsmanship
Karatage means the purity of the gold - 24K is pure gold
Gram weight is how heavy it is, and Craftsmanship is how well it's made - is it a mold or hand crafted
A charm bracelet might be a great gift for her that can start with one charm and more charms can be added later.
A watch might be a great gift for him, but when dealing with watches, remember you're looking at two things, when it comes to price - The outside of the watch and the inside of the watch.
The outside will make a price difference on whether it's stainless steel, or 18k gold and whether or not it has diamonds.
The inside of the watch will make a price difference on whether the watch is quartz and takes a battery (less expensive) or if the watch is mechanical (more expensive) because it can have up to six hundred parts, put together by hand.

Just The Facts (Post 159)
OK, so maybe you want to impress someone with the facts you know about Valentine’s Day. Here’s a few for your ten cent crazy book.
The lovers' holiday, known as Valentine's Day, has its origins in the Pagan rite of Roman fertility, that dates back to the 4th century B.C. Young men drew from a box the names of young women, who became their companions.
Valentine was stoned, clubbed and beheaded because he began secretly marrying young lovers after Emperor Claudius II banned marriage in an attempt to attract more young men to the army.
The name Asterius is important to the Valentine's Day story because he was Valentine’s jailer, and legend has it that Asterious’ daughter's blindness was cured by Valentine. In a farewell note to her, Valentine wrote the message "From Your Valentine."
The Roman civilization introduced Valentine's Day cards. It was Roman men who first offered women written-wishes of affection.
The earliest surviving Valentine's Day card is by Charles, the Duke of Orleans who wrote a Valentine's Day card to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London.
There was a great increase in anonymous Valentine's Day cards -- particularly risqué ones -- in 18th-century England, when a reduction in postal rates made it affordable and fashionable.
Cupid, the cherub who totes love potion-dipped arrows, is son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty, and is always associated with Valentine's Day.
The letter X represents a kiss in Valentine's Day cards, but long ago, when many did not know how to write, an X or the sign of the cross was accepted as a sworn oath. Sincerity of the oath was often finalized with a kiss of the X

You don't listen to others when they say bad things about this person
You always find time for them, even when you don't have any spare time
You say their name all the time
You're happy all the time and smile for no reason
You care more about your looks
Your manners are better around them
